Avoid Unfiltered tap water if you have kidney disease or are on dialysis!

Q: Why is it essential to have the cleanest water possible for dialysis treatments?

Some contaminants, such as chlorine and chloramines, are acutely toxic to patients should they be exposed to them. And some chemicals can build up and cause long-term or significant health problems as the patient's compromised kidneys are unable to remove these contaminants from the body. It is for these reasons that we must ensure that the water used for dialysis meets AAMI standards.

Q: Why does tap water pose a risk for dialysis patients?

Tap water does not meet the standards required for dialysis water treatment due to the chemicals water municipalities add to the water to make it safe to drink. These chemicals include flocculants such as aluminum sulfate, fluoride, and polyphosphates to reduce corrosion, as well as various disinfectants, such as ozone, chlorine dioxide, chlorine, and chloramines. As I mentioned before, these chemicals can be harmful to dialysis patients since their kidneys are unable to filter the contaminants from their body.

Don't Get Weighed Down with Bottled Water

Instead, let us help you explore your

Water Filter options.

Every home needs a filter in their kitchen. Our water is not what it used to be. To protect yourself and your family, at the very least use a pitcher filter. Any filter is better than none, but some are superior to others. The most thorough filters are Reverse osmosis followed closely by carbon block/activated carbon, and ion exchange.

Factors to consider: what's the condition of your tap water, the cost to your health and your family if you don't filter,  the cost of getting a filter, replacing filters and maintenance.  do you have room and patience to install a reverse osmosis filter, what type of filter suits you best?

Reverse Osmosis (RO):

Most Thorough Filter. Typically installed under the kitchen sink. These filters remove everything, including beneficial minerals. These also waste the most water per gallon.

Carbon Block/Activated Carbon:

Excellent filters found in Gravity Filters like the Berkey, Boroux,  British berkefeld, and Epic. These filters leave trace minerals in place providing further health benefits for you.

Counter Top Models:

usually carbon filters, but some brands combine features.

Pitcher filters:

Pitchers have chambers composed usually of carbon.

Pur filters, Epic pitchers are pretty good. Brita Elite Filter is more thorough than the original Brita.

Fridge filters:

These usually contain a carbon chamber.

Whole Home Filters

Whole house filters cover your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. These systems cost a bit more but provide very thorough coverage for you and your entire family. No extra filters are needed for your faucet or your fridge as all water is filtered at the point it enters your home.

Good Whole House Filters include: Water Drop, Culligan,

Protect your family by filtering your water!

Distilled water:
Not a good long-term solution for drinking water!

Early Death Comes From Drinking Distilled Water

Scary headline but it's true! Health depends on good water because good water contains minerals, not contaminants. Too many of us are not getting all the minerals and essential nutrients our bodies require.

If you don't yet have a filter, see some options below.

While a Brita filter may not be the best filter, it's easy to find, and any water filter is better than none. (FYI, the Elite Brita filters more out).

In the meantime, know that Distilled water will not provide you with any minerals. As Dr. Rona points this out in his article, "The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state."
